Chappell started this new intimidation technique by giving paceman Dennis Lillee nine slips, against New Zealand in the 1976-77 series.

In 976,  Chappell set about intimidating New Zealand no. 11 batsman Peter Petherick, in a completely different way – by placing all his nine fielders in the slip-cordon.

This tactic has been successively used later on by Steve Waugh, when his side went on a Zimbabwe tour.
