Team Name:- Mumbai Indians
Captain:- Rohit Sharma

Mumbai Indians won their first IPL title by beating Chennai Super Kings by 23 runs in the final at Eden Gardens last season.  The curtains of IPL 7 will fall on 16th March with the defending champions taking on Kolkata Knight Riders which has always been an unpredictable team. With the teams undergoing almost a complete makeover this time around, it remains to be seen how the new teams fare as a unit.

There is no Sachin Tendulkar remember! So, it is a new era where new players will have to form the face of the side. Mumbai have a strong group and have the firepower to do well in the new season.

Last year’s Strategy: Initially, Mumbai relied on the legends Ricky Ponting and Tendulkar at the top. However, Ponting wasn’t in form and so he took a big decision and dropped himself handing over the captaincy to Rohit Sharma. Tendulkar regained some touch, but missed the latter half of the tournament due to an injury. However, Mumbai backed the attacking approach upfront as Dwayne Smith filled the void perfectly. Plus, Pollard turned out to be the finisher they hoped he would. Dinesh Karthik, Ambati Rayudu and Rohit Sharma were the main men in the middle order. To back their strong batting lineup, they had Mitchell Jhonson with the reliable Lasith Malinga. Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha handled the spinning duties with success.

This year’s Strategy: Mumbai used their retentions to their fullest extent, retaining the core group of the previous year’s win- Rohit, Rayudu, Pollard, Harbhajan and Malinga and to go with that, they got back Ojha, Suyal, Tare and Marathe at the auction. However, they have done well to get Michael Hussey as they need someone at the top who is reliable and can score at a fair clip. This year too, they will back their star power as they have the big names. There is great emphasis on the all-rounders in the middle and Cory Anderson would want to emulate Pollard’s exploits in the IPL. But, it is also interesting to see the pace battery they have packed. Zaheer comes back after three seasons to partner Malinga. But, they also have John Hazlewood, Merchant de Lange, Santokie as options. So, overall, they have a very good side and their formula seems simple like every season — star power.
