That day When a Cricket Team declared innings after playing 1 ball: Can you guess the lowest total when a team declared their innings in a recognized Test match ? You might be thinking 10, 20, 30, 40 etc. Answer is No!

Unusual Declaration in Cricket

It’s 0-0 (0.1 Overs) when a team declared their innings. It happened in 1977 when a 3-day county test match was played at Lord’s between Middlesex and Surrey.

In County Championship(1977) Middlesex won the toss and elected to field against Surrey. It was a 3-day match but first day was washed out because of rain and 2nd day too washed out when Surrey scored just 8 runs in a rain affected day. Surrey were at 1-8 after 2nd day of play.

Next day, the 3rd one, When Surrey came out to bat, they were bundled out on a score of 49 in 22.5 overs.

In response, when Middlesex came out to bat in 1st innings, after playing just ‘1’ ball, they declared their innings without putting a single run on the board.

Surrey came out to bat in the 2nd innings and again they were bowled out on just 89 runs in 50.3 overs.

Middlesex got the target of 139. That time, hundred overs were the quota of the day to be bowled by any team . Middlesex chased this total of 139 runs in just 25.1 overs with the loss of 1 wicket.

A a team declared their innings without scoring a single run and won the match. Isn’t it amazing?
